This has become my favorite 5K in the whole world. One dollar entry fee, a cotton t-shirt, flat fast loop course with no traffic, great local race atmosphere. And turkeys for the age group winners!
I talked Allie into running this with me in the quest for sub 18 minutes. She spent the night in Tremonton with friends (she has friends everywhere) we met at 9:15, signed in, and ran the course once to warm up. Perfect weather, sunny, not too cold, no wind, day was looking good! Got to meet blogger Melody and her husband (Jim I think, or John?) right before the race. Melody was running with a baby on board, very impressive. My wife Karen joined me for this race, fighting a cold, bummer. My friend Gina from Tremonton ran for the second straight year as well, it occurred to me I met her exactly 30 years ago next Saturday (November 20, 1980) when we entered the MTC in the same group heading to Norway. But I digress.
The race started and Allie and I went out in 2nd place with some guy I didn't know ahead of us but pulling away. The bear river x-country kids were not here this year for some reason. I was supposed to be a model pacer in the quest for sub 18, but I got too excited about trying to see if I could stay in striking range of the unknown guy in front of me so came through mile one in 5:30. Ooops. Allie was running strong, just a few seconds behind me. Alas, I couldn't catch the guy in front as he increased the gap. I am the world's worst pacer, I should have run the first mile in 5:45, what an idiot I am, making Allie go out too fast, she must hate me. well, Mile 2, 5:50, dang. Mile 3, 5:55, double dang, positive splits are the story of my life. Last 0.1 miles, 5:50. I finished in 17:47, exactly matching my old man 5K PR of 17:47 set at the TOU 5K two years ago. Well, at least I am as fast at age 49 as I was at age 47. The guy who won ran 17:20. Allie came in shortly after me to set a new 5K PR (big congrats!), followed by blogger Melody finishing in just over 20 minutes with a 6 month baby boy on board. Amazing! And all three of us won turkeys for our age groups, turkeys for all the bloggers!! Lots of fun.Pictures to follow.
After the race Allie and I went back up the course, paced Karen in to a strong finish, then Melody, Allie and I ran a couple mile cool down. Great day, great race, looking forward to another fun 5K in Farmington with bloggers in a couple weeks.

Scott it was so nice to finally meet you and your wife (and your MTC comp). You are an incredible runner! Great job on your race today. Thanks for the tip on Allie's blog. I never would have known about the race if you didn't keep harassing her to run it.

That does sound like a great race. I'll have to put it on my list.

That's a really nice time too Scott. Congratulations.

Way to bring home the prize!

From Cody on Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 23:59:21 from 174.52.244.185

Well Done! Well, except for the pacing I guess.

From allie on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 00:13:20 from 174.23.238.75

scott- thanks for the great suggestion about this race. i am currently wearing my $5 shirt that i purchased for $1.

thanks for the encouragement you gave me in the first mile when i started to fall back. it helped a ton. and you are definitely NOT the world's worst pacer. i figured you would be somewhere around 17:40-50, so that helped me to gauge where i was at in the race. you ran a great time today and i am happy that you went out and ran hard instead of waiting for my wheezing self.

we have to make this an annual event. best value in utah.

also, karen has a killer kick! that was fun to watch.

I'm glad you took over the title of world's worst pacer from allie. You deserve it.

From Paul on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 14:56:31 from 174.27.187.235

Congrats on the time and the turkey.

From Tom on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 10:49:03 from 137.65.56.16

Nice job. Congrats on matching the PR, sub-18 is pretty awesome for 49.

From Dave S on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 13:51:51 from 4.254.224.141

Nice Job ! Sounds like a fun race. Enjoy the turkey.

thanks for the kind comments guys, great to hear from you all!

Melody, great to meet youm and thanks for the info on the 4 miler, I just realized Saturday is my wife's birthday so I will probably stick around home all day to be a good husband. but if she is interested in running for her birthday, well, then I may come!

Rob, I hope you can make it next year, I graduate to the "50 and over" age group then, so can get beat by you with no loss of turkey!

Burt, due to that insult and my hurt feelings I just cancelled my plane reservation to come surprise you and pace you to that 5:50 mile in the open mile. And I was really coming. No kidding. trust me.

From Nan on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 21:35:50 from 98.245.117.176

Awesome race report, Scott. And congrats on hitting old man PR time!! Thats gotta be a good feeling to still be rocking speedy legs.

Don't worry about the positive splits. We will have some synergy to work on that in Farmington. Looking forward to racing with you again soon!

From Aaron Kennard on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 21:57:46 from 98.245.117.176

Nicely Done Scott! Look forward to working on lowering that with you in Farmington...we just need to not get sucked into the Nan 5:30 pace though and keep ourselves at 5:4x the first mile.

From JD on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 22:27:19 from 67.186.212.213

Nice job Scott! I may see you guys at the Farmington race, about 4 minutes later than you at the finish.

From Scott Ensign on Tue, Nov 16, 2010 at 20:14:36 from 70.58.47.122

JD, Nan and Aaron, thanks, Farmingtom looks like a good chance to test Nan's proven formula of starting slow and getting faster. Aaron can put a leash on me to slow me down if needed! See you soon!
