This is the fourth marathon I have run since I started running in 2005. My previous marathons were Top of Utah 2006 (3:06 and change), Boston 2007 (3:13 and change) and Mesquite 2009 (2:57 and change). I had a good year at the 10K to half marathon distances and based on my times in those and my training thought I might have a shot at a 2:50 today if all went well. I got all excited, using Paul's pacing chart for 2:50 to prepare, and teaming up with my work buddy Neal Legler and Allie Scott to go after the 2:50. I started right on Paul's pace chart using my garmin, miles 1 and 2 were 6:22 and 6:25. I was worried though because Allie had not gone out with me, and Neal was chasing a lead pack and disappeared, so my little plan appeared to be falling apart. I figured Allie was warming up (I was right) and I was relieved and happy when she appeared somewhere around mile 3 or 4, I can't remember. For awhile we teamed up with another guy wearing nike frees. We were like a trio in an advertisement for nike frees. This section until Hollow road were arguably the funnest I have ever had in a race. Allie pulled ahead of me for a short time at maybe mile 9 or something, I can't remember, as I started to struggle a bit, but then Paul Petersen and Dave Nelson caught me. This confused me since I though they were only chasing 2:59. At this point I got ticked off at deserting Allie and motivated to put on a surge and ditch Paul (yeah take that buddy) and rejoin Allie. We ran together until Hollow road, where my calves and quads started cramping mildly. At this point I lost mental and physical focus and Allie surged ahead. I was disappointed I couldn't stay with her, but happy for her. So I figured, maybe I can get motivation from Paul when he catches me, which he did midway down hollow road. To my dismay, Keith was right on Paul and Dave's tail drafting off them. We smiled at each other, and I knew I wasn't going to be able to hang with their pace, they looked too strong and I was struggling with cramps in my legs and stomach. Fortunately I had Cody waiting for me at mile 18 to bring me in. Seeing him waiting for me was a huge relief, I was even thinking of DNFing if he hadn't been there to bring me in. I was hurting worse than I have ever hurt over miles 18-25. Cody was kind and patient and put up with me being a complete wuss, carrying my drinks and gels, massaging my legs (OK I made that part up..) and helping me take down two guys around miles 24.5 and 25.5 to give me the confidence to get in. First half was 1:24 and chage, second half about 1:31.  Final time 2:55:18. I beat my bib number by two places so that is good.

Normally I would be really happy with a PR and a 2:55 but when I set goals for myself I really like to achieve them, so I was pretty disappointed I didn't hit at least 2:52 or 2:53. But I still have a lot to learn about the marathon, it is a strange and unforgiving beast. And I also think the TOU course is tougher than people give it credit for. My problems (like in the half) started at the transition from downhill to level/uphill/tight turns/heavy traffic running. I really hate the last 7 or 8 miles of this course, and I hate the cars on the course starting at mile 17. I think I will enter the St George lottery next year so I can try my luck on a more consistent downhill without all the suburban turns and hills. Or, maybe try a sea level flat course like Newport Oregon.

Thanks to Cody for bringing me in, and Allie for letting me run with her in the canyon and keeping me going there, I really really enjoyed that, it made the marathon worth it. Much funner than the other marathons where I was pretty much solo the whole way, or ran with people I didn't know, running marathons deaf is tough and it is nice to know people on the course. Kudos to the blog for providing a great community to meet other runners and motivate and inspire each other. And congrats to all the bloggers who did so well today, great day for FRB!

Congrats on the PR, you ran a solid race. As you said, the marathon is a tough thing to conquer and you are continuing to improve so you will get your goals!

From Paul on Sun, Sep 19, 2010 at 16:48:36 from 174.27.187.235

Congrats on the PR! It was fun running with you. Sorry about dragging Keith up to you, but he insisted. He was afraid of your kick, though, but he ended up outkicking Dave and I pretty bad.

Scott, I think you ran a great race. If it isn't hurting after mile 20, then you aren't running hard enough. Congrats on a strong effort. And on dropping Paul (even though he caught up again).

Congratulations on the PR! Scott, I can only hope that when I'm at your age I can still run a 2:50-something marathon. I saw you come in and you looked so strong. Solid performance today.

Nice job Scott! congrats on the PR.

awesome job, scott. i really had a great time running with you. those canyon miles have never gone by so fast for me. you have a lot to be proud of from this race with the PR and staying strong through the cramping issues. really great job.

go nike free!

Fun running with you a bit at the start! I think you had a great race. I have never ran a good TOU marathon, don't know if it's the course or that it's at the end of the season and I'm dead anyways. Let's train together next summer for it and stack the top twenty. The Herald Journal reporter made the comment to me that the locals were taking this marathon back. It would be cool to get 10 locals in the top twenty.

Well done my friend. I think you have a 2:50 in you. It just sounds like you had a few cramps that weren't agreeing with you.

From Steve Piccolo on Sun, Sep 19, 2010 at 22:54:06 from 155.101.243.223

Way to get a PR! And congrats on finishing your fourth marathon.

From Cody on Sun, Sep 19, 2010 at 23:08:50 from 174.52.244.185

PR is a PR! I enjoy watching people suffer! That is why I like to pace people at the end of races instead of at the beginning when the flowers are still pretty and life is great! You pushed through the pain nicely and still finished strong. I was so proud you caught that guy the last mile. Well done.

From Dustin on Sun, Sep 19, 2010 at 23:21:00 from 209.33.192.10

Congrats on the PR.

Sounds like you had a great race! And hey everyone is right, a PR is a PR!! I agree that the course is challenging; especially that final 10k where the hills and turns are constant. Running on the busy main street is pretty annoying too (probably even more annoying when you're deaf). Glad you had an enjoyable time running with bloggers!

I do think a sea level relatively flat course would bring another PR for you.

From Aaron Kennard on Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 00:07:59 from 24.8.144.22

Congrats Scott! Nicely done on a PR!

Scott, Sorry you didn't make your goal. However, I second, third or whatever the count is up to "a PR is a PR". Nice work!

From Rob on Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 09:55:31 from 72.254.127.205

I too ran in my Nike Free's. The people at Salt Lake Running Company laughed at me when I told them I was going to run a full marathon in them. I don't think they really hindered me in anyway. I did have a big blood blister on one of my toes at the end but I don't blame the shoe.

From Scott Ensign on Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 15:05:14 from 129.123.3.31

thanks for the kind comments everyone, I appreciate it, you guys are awesome. I am happier now with my 2:55, and it gives me something to work towards for improvement. probably no TOU next year, I will save that for age 50, but who knows. I will try to get in SG via the lottery next year.

Rob, I thought the nike frees made an excellent show for the marathon, the extra cushioning and heel over a racing flat made a big difference.

I messed up my left big toe at the DN 10K and TOU half, and now it appears to be infected pretty badly, so I am off to the doctor. This gives me an excuse to stop running for awhile anyway.

I'm real late on the blog here because I was on vacation from posting for a week also, but it was nice to *meet* you during the race. Sorry we couldn't run together longer. Good races all around, I'm sure I'll see you out on a course again sometime. Especially if you end up at Newport, I have it in the back of my mind to look for a 2:50 there.
