local 10K up Smithfield canyon and back down, starting and ending at mack park. It is a challenging course because the first 3 miles are a continual uphill climb up canyon road with an elevation gain of about 450 feet. Then you turn around and rip back down the canyon, taking a loop around upper canyon road. I mapped the course here.  It was a cold morning, maybe 38 degrees at race time (7:30 AM) but no wind and the sun was coming out. I ran a carbon copy of this race from the last time I ran it (2008) hitting the turnaround at an average 6:47 pace. then I let it rip as fast as I could back down again. I ran the whole way down with Keith Anderson. We came down the steep hill off upper canyon road back onto smithfield canyon road side by side and then went into a sprint for the finish 0.2 miles away. I got lucky today and help him off by 0.9 seconds. .

Unusually strong field this year with  Steve Anderson, Carson Campbell and Trevor Ball running, with Carson taking first Steve second and trevor third. A guy from Vernal I don't know rounded out the top 4 and then a 13 year old kid finished 0.4 seconds ahead of me.My time this year was 4 seconds faster than 2008.

Wow what a race! Three people finishing that close to each other in a 10k? Exciting.

Nice racing! That does sound like a strong field. And what's with the 13 yr. old coming in that fast? Whew, youth!

From Dave S on Sat, May 08, 2010 at 21:23:31 from 4.254.231.36

Nice job Scott! It was fun watching that sprint between you and Keith at the end. That was a long fast sprint. It looked painful.

From Steve Piccolo on Sat, May 08, 2010 at 23:32:37 from 66.60.122.29

Nice job and way to hold off Keith!

From Scott Ensign on Sun, May 09, 2010 at 00:22:02 from 65.100.253.227

Burt, it was indeed close, and with another 100 yards and i would have beat that 13 year old kid! geez how pathetic does that sound?

JD- I was pretty amazed by the 13 year old. Keith and I were reeling him in at the end but he stepped it up to hold us off. pretty amazing.

Dave- it was indeed as painful as it looked. I am paying for it now. ouch.

Steve- thanks, we still need to run a race together. maybe I will reconsider and do DN 10K if you run it. My feet need will need fresh blisters by then anyway.

You're a racing machine lately! nice job sprinting to the end.

From Steve on Sun, May 09, 2010 at 23:19:34 from 64.134.158.81

Nice running with you again, Scott. I keep getting asked by people if I know that fast professor that runs and at first I didn't know who it was. That's what is so cool about this blog.

From Nan on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 00:53:19 from 174.51.250.151

Sounds unique and fun. Great job Professor!

From Scott Ensign on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 16:03:53 from 65.100.253.227

"that fast professor".... I have someone fooled somewhere.. more like the "wishes he was fast professor". but a nice compliment none the less.

Aaron and Nan- thanks- and see you in three weeks. Based on my performances to date I don't think this is going to be a spectacular BB for me but I will do my best. I will consider myself fortunate to run just under 38:00. that's my best BB time anyway- exactly 38:00. a 37:30 would be great.

From Steve Piccolo on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 16:15:31 from 66.60.122.29

If Ensign says he's hoping for a 37:30, I'm guessing he'll do a 36:00.
